(Maybe for the Generation VII games as well?) This petition is made in the hopes that the majority will reach the developers of Game Freak, whose team is headed by Junichi Masuda, and implore them to solve this simple mistake and reverse the overkill, by releasing a patch that will change a 50 back into an 80. The longtime fans who loved Generation IV, including myself, would love to see Darkrai restored to its former glory, especially in time to see it perform well in upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus side-game. It is now Generation VIII, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the remakes of the generation which introduced Darkrai have now been released. In conclusion, this nerf occurred years ago, one generation prior. No other Mythical Pokémon has been forced to rely on another Pokémon's setup to make an in-built strategy, or to hold an accuracy boosting item to make themselves useful in gameplay. Players who mainly play the Main Games for fun were unable to enjoy using Darkrai, and worse yet, this change will undoubtedly carry over into the side games which borrow move mechanics from the main titles.įinally, though this reaches into the rule of cool, no other Mythical Pokémon has ever suffered a nerf on this scale, especially not involving their signature moves. This nerf not only over-addressed what was ultimately a non-issue in what was only a part of the wider Pokémon community, but it also hurt everyone in it who enjoyed Darkrai's utility. Any purported nuisance Darkrai would've presented which has been used to justify this nerf is overblown and exaggerated. There are far more notorious strategies which involve Status moves, such as a paralyzing move like Thunder Wave, followed by a Flinch-inducing move such as Air Slash, Fake Out, or Bite. Mega Rayquaza is allowed to mega-evolve in this unofficial scene while holding an item. Meanwhile in unofficial competitive scenes, tournaments could have their cake and eat it too simply by restricting Darkrai's appearances or issuing restrictions on status moves, and the popular online battle sim "Pokémon Showdown" not only allows the current advantage gimmick Dynamax, but also Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves. This renders a sleep strategy practically unviable, even in casual gameplay.ĭarkrai is a Mythical Pokémon, and thus would see far less usage in any official competitive events than any other common Pokémon. In fact, because it is a Mythical Pokemon in the first place, Darkrai would be barred from competing in the first place. As a result, Darkrai would not be anywhere near as much of a nuisance as other Pokémon being nerfed for the sake of balance, such as Talonflame. With Dark Void being reduced to a 50% hit-or-miss ratio, players are forced to rely on the move Hypnosis, which does not provide a much better alternative at only 10% more accuracy, and only targets a single Pokémon at a time. The unfairness of this nerf comes from the fact that Darkrai is clearly made to function effectively when the opposing Pokémon is put to sleep. This measure was needless, and overkill. If the point was to preserve the use of Dark Void, why remove all desirability to use it? Smeargle was already stopped from co-opting Darkrai's MO. Game Freak intervened, but they went too far. The company made Dark Void mechanically usable only by Darkrai, but they also nerfed Dark Void's accuracy. The reason Dark Void was nerfed has nothing inherently to do with Darkrai, but rather, another Pokémon named Smeargle. As a Mythical Pokémon, Darkrai and its exclusive moves were naturally hard to come by, with Smeargle's signature move, Sketch, which allows it to permanently copy a move from the opposing Pokemon in battle, Smeargle could copy Dark Void.īecause Smeargle was a more common Pokemon, it ran rampant in online battles. Its accuracy was reduced from 80 points to 50. Half of the time, the powerful status move would miss from that point onward. Officially introduced in 2007, Darkrai quickly gained acclaim and notoriety for its sleep-based moveset, which involved its signature move, Dark Void, and its ability, Bad Dreams. Dark Void would target all opposing field Pokémon in Single, Double, or Triple Battles, and put them to sleep.Īround 2016-17, during Generation VII, Dark Void was nerfed. This is a petition to Pokémon fans who favor the Mythical Pokémon Darkrai.
